For some applications, urethane foams cannot be used. Silicone foams offer advantages over urethanes including much higher heat resistance, oxidation resistance and overall longevity for many applications. Silicone foams do not dry out and crumble over time as flexible urethane foams do. The disadvantage is that Silicone foams are relatively expensive.
Smooth-On sells a surprising amount of Soma Foama® 15 platinum silicone foam every year for cushioning applications, prosthetic and orthotic applications and for mask making /appliance building for creating special effects. Soma Foama® is often used with our Dragon Skin® and Ecoflex® platinum silicone rubber products for a variety of applications.
New Soma Foama® 25 is a higher density 25 lb. (400 kg/m³) version of Soma Foam® 15 with advantages over the 15 lb. product.
Soma Foama® 25 is easier to use with a 1A:1B by volume mix ratio (vs. 2A:1B by volume for the 15). Pot life is 90 seconds and handling time is 20 minutes at room temperature.
The biggest advantages that the 25 offers over the 15 is that the cured foam has higher physical properties and offers a better surface finish.
