Making a Lightweight Display Model of Heavy Duty Equipment
A manufacturer of steel drill bits used to drill through miles of rock in the quest for precious crude oil needed a way to represent its products to potential customers at trade shows around the world.  However, the cost to ship these impossibly heavy drill bits to trade show venues and customer locations was prohibitive and hazardous.  Company officials sought a material answers and found
professional mold maker and caster Harold Hovde of H&H Molds in Dallas.  Mr. Hovde made molds of each drill bit using Smooth-On mold rubber.  Into each mold he rotationally cast TASK® 6 and filled the plastic shell cavity with Foam-iT!® 5 rigid urethane foam. These castings were physically identical to the original drill bit model in appearance. The weight, however, of each casting was a small fraction of its original counterpart and could be easily carried by anyone.  Different finishes were possible with a combination of paints and varnishes.

The lightweight castings cost much less to ship to tradeshow and customer venues, yet gave a perfect phsyical representation of each drill bit configuration.
