Foam-iT!® 8 Castable Rigid Foam Features Unique Performance Properties
Charlie Campbell of Campbell's Custom Tooling in Watertown, NY was spending a fortune on modelling board to make his prototypes. The high cost of modelling board had been a fact of life since he started his business 8 years ago but the price had almost doubled in the last 12 months and he was being told by his supplier that his most recent order could not be delivered for 4 weeks. Charlie had a deadline to meet on a current project and needed and alternative. Charlie attended a Smooth-On seminar several years ago and contacted them in the hopes that there was a material way out of this problem.
Foam-iT!® 8 castable rigid foam was recommended as a possibility and Charlie bought a trial unit to experiment with. He built a simple block form, cast the foam and capped it to provide back pressure to get a fine surface finish. Charlie states that, "the foam casting machined beautifully and got everyone in my shop excited. It never occured to me that we could go in this direction".
Campbell's now casts their own modelling board to size, virtually eliminating expensive wasted board.
What's Different About Foam-iT® 8? This castable foam is self-skinning with a finer, more uniform cell structure. It reproduces surface detail better than other castable foams. It also machines better (more accurately), giving a cleaner edge on machined parts and models. This product also has a higher flexural strength than other castable foams. Foam-iT!® 8 is bright white.
The mix ratio is 2A:1B by weight and demold time is two hours.
Foam-iT!® 8's unique self-skinning exterior results in fine detail reproduction.
Foam-iT!® 8 is dimensionally stable and machines precisely.
