Antique Chair Repair Turns Trash to Treasure
An antique chair is easily repaired using Smooth-Cast® 385 mineral filled casting resin and Universal® Release Agent.

1 - Damaged antique chair found at a garage sale.

2 - The small piece of carved wood missing from the top of the chair can quickly be replaced with Smooth-CastŪ 385 mineral filled resin.

3 - Containment walls are made with pieces of modeling clay.

4 - Molding clay is applied along the gap to form containment walls.

5 - The modeling clay is then firmly pressed against a backing board to contain the Smooth-CastŪ 385 liquid resin.

6 - UniversalŪ Release Agent is applied to an acid brush.

7 - The UniversalŪ Release Agent is brushed onto the base board only.

8 - Smooth-CastŪ Part B is measured by weight using a gram scale.

9 - Smooth-CastŪ Part A is measured by weight using a gram scale.

10 - Smooth-CastŪ 385 Part A and Part B are combined.

11 - Thoroughly mix Parts A and B scraping the sides and bottom several times.

12 - Mix A and B until a uniform color is achieved.

13 - Slowly pour the liquid mixture into the void between the clay walls until completely full.

14 - Allow the Smooth-CastŪ 385 to cure a minimum of 2 hours before removing the clay walls.

15 - A tool may be need to remove clay from the inside surfaces.

16 - The cured Smooth-CastŪ 385 is sanded to match the contours of the carved chair.

17 - Smooth-CastŪ 385 is completely bonded to the wood and ready to finish.

18 - Gold Leaf is applied to the Smooth-CastŪ 385 resin to match existing chair finish.

19 - Once the Gold Leafing is complete, a patina is applied to match the existing finish.

20 - The repaired area perfectly matches the existing chair.

21 - From start to finish, the repair was completed in four hours.
