Creating Mind
Blowing Skin
Effects
& Appliances With Slacker™
Tactile Mutator |
Slacker is a versatile
one-component silicone modifier for platinum silicones (Dragon
Skin or Ecoflex) that allows the user to attain a variety of
tactile effects. Applications includ creating a variety of special
effects, creating Halloween masks, etc.
What Exactly
Can You Do With Slacker?
A. Slacker will soften and alter
the "feel" of the cured silicone. The user can vary the amount of
Slacker added to the silicone mix to better simulate the feel of
human skin (depending on the users' interpretation of what human
skin feels like).
B. When added in high percentages
to Dragon Skin (for example 1A:1B:3 Parts Slacker), the silicone
becomes a "gel" which can be used to produce a gel filled special
effects appliance or a medical cushioning appliance / device. We
recommend testing the stability of the gel for your application.
C. Tackifier/adhesion promoter.
When added to Dragon Skin (1:1:2 and higher), Slacker will cure to
a tacky consistency that can be used to make a self sticking mask
or appliance.
To give you an idea of you can
expect by varying the amount of Slacker added to Dragon Skin, we
offer the following.
| Mix Ratio:
Dragon Skin + Slacker™ |
Results |
| 1A:1B: 1 Part
Slacker |
Soft, skin-like silicone.
Has about the same feel as Ecoflex 0030 with less snap. |
|
1A:1B: 2 Parts Slacker |
Much softer than
the above, with a tacky surface. |
| 1A:1B:3 Parts
Slacker |
Gel-like consistency. Not
easily handled and we recommend that the gel be contained in a
membrane made of Dragon Skin or Ecoflex. |
Other Things You Need To Know
About Slacker:As the above chart indicates, Slacker will
produce a tacky surface when mixed at a ratio higher than 1A: 1B :
1 Part Slacker. If you prefer a dry surface, you can powder the
surface with talc.
When making a self-sticking
appliance, it is recommended that a membrane be used on the top
surface of the appliance that will feather out to the edge of the
casting. It is recommended that a 1/8 inch section of membrane
extend all the way around the appliance Brush membrane material
into top section of the appliance mold. When tacky, pour in Dragon
skin / Slacker mixture (1A:1B:2Slacker) into mold. Squeeze
together and let cure. Press appliance onto skin and glue edges
down with Skin Tite™ silicone adhesive.

Psycho Paint:
Creating
Mind Blowing Skin Effects |
Smooth-On soft
platinum silicones continue to grow in popularity for creating a
variety of special effects. Customers have sent us images of
amazing monsters, animal reproductions, wounds, scars, etc. made
with Dragon Skin and Ecoflex products.
Psycho
Paint™ - is a two
component platinum silicone that is pigmented with Silc-Pig™
silicone pigments and then thinned with a solvent to make a paint
that readily adheres to any cured platinum silicone. The mixture
is applied using a brush or an air brush to a model’s surface.
Until now, people have colored their creations with a paint made
of Dragon Skin™ (or Ecoflex™) and Silc-Pig™ pigments. These
products however have high viscosities that limit what you can
achieve.
Layers of Psycho Paint
can quickly create
spectacular skin effects
that last as long as
the appliance.
Psycho Paint™ Advantages -
Psycho Paint™ has a low viscosity
that allows it to be delivered to a model’s surface with an air
brush. A lower viscosity also makes Psycho Paint™ easier to
control. Psycho Paint™ layers on better and stays where you put
it. The lower viscosity also allows you to spray Psycho Paint™
using an air brush and makes paint effects (like "stippling")
easier to achieve. Psycho Paint™ is also faster curing and it
adheres very well to itself and other platinum silicones.

Part A and Part B are measured in equal amounts into a mixing
container. Start with a small amount. You can add more if
needed. |
Two parts of Toluene are
added for airbrushing. |

with Silc Pig pigments. |
Components
are mixed to
a uniform color. |
Psycho Paint is dispensed
into an airbrush (available at many hobby shops). |

| Paint is
applied evenly by moving the airbrush back and forth.

A little
Psycho Paint goes a long way. Different colored layers can be
applied to create color effects. |
More Psycho Paint is
mixed and applied with a brush. |

| Psycho Paint adheres
well and can be stretched or flexed without delaminating or
cracking. Great for repetitive motion applications. |
Introducing:
Dragon Skin™ and SMASH!™ Plastic
As many know, Smooth-On products have been used for years to
create movie special effects.
Movies that pre-date and include “Jaws” all the way through
Harry Potter have used our urethane rubber & plastics, silicones,
foams, etc. to create movie magic.
Two exciting additions
to our special effects line are:
Dragon Skin™ & Dragon Skin Q™
The “Q”
stands for “quick” and simply refers to the working time and cure
time of the material. They
are high performance silicone rubbers that are water white translucent,
very soft, very strong and very “stretchy”.
It will stretch many times its original size without tearing and
will rebound to its original form without distortion.
Dragon Skin was originally
developed for a large-scale animatronics application.
Top Priority - the material had to withstand the
opening and closing of the jaws many times (repetitive motion) without
tearing or distorting.
What
Is SMASH™?
SMASH! Plastic is a
two-component urethane that is mixed 1A: 1B by volume and cures to a
water clear solid plastic designed to break like glass on impact.
It Really Works!
The Smooth-On lab did a tremendous balancing act, formulating
this product not to be too fragile, but to certainly break on impact.
It truly looks and sounds like breaking glass when smashed.
Broken fragments look like broken glass.
SMASH!™ can be cast
solid (for making window panes) or rotationally cast (for making
bottles, drinking glasses, etc.) in thicknesses NO GREATER THAN
1/8” (.32 cm).
If using this product for smashing over someone’s head, make
sure you observe this thickness limitation or someone could be injured.
[Move

If casting solid, vacuum degassing or pressure casting are recommended
to help eliminate air voids.
If rotocasting, finished castings will look like frosted glass.
If you want clarity in a bottle casting, better to build a core
mold and cast with a 1/8” wall
thickness.
SMASH!
can be pigmented to look like a beer bottle or other color shade
using SO-Strong™ tints.
SMASH!™ was initially
developed to be used in combination with our
Rubber Glass (right), a flexible silicone
rubber which
simulates broken glass, ice and diamonds, giving end-users tremendous
flexibility.
