Taxidermy

Taxidermists like Tony Breedlove of Wildlife Art Creations in Melrose, FL, are using Smooth-On liquid rubber and liquid plastic products to create flawless reproductions of fish, reptiles and game. Innovative mold making and casting techniques have redefined the state-of-the-art in realistically reproducing wildlife.

Smooth-On mold rubber is brushed onto frozen specimens or deer antlers to create perfect reproductions of the original. Smooth-On liquid plastics are cast into the molds and then painted to achieve life-like realism.

Making a Brush-On Silicone Mold to Create Reproduction Antlers
(From the Video by Authentic Taxidermy)

Ease Release 200 is applied
to the antlers, which have
been secured to plywood.
A first coat of Dragon Skin
is applied in a thin layer to prevent air bubbles.
A second, pigmented coat
of Dragon Skin is applied
evenly over the first coat.
The final layer of Dragon Skin is pigmented and applied & allowed to cure.

Shims are applied to provide separation of  the sections of the mother mold. The first section of the Plasti-Paste mother mold
is applied.
Ease Release 2910 prevents the second part of the shell from sticking to the first. The final section of the
Plasti-Paste mother mold
is completed.

When fully cured, the sections of the mother mold are separated and removed. The mold is then cut along one side and removed from the original model antlers.

The rubber mold is seated in the mother mold to prepare it for casting. Drywall screws are used to tightly close the shell  and secure it to the board. Smooth-Cast 300 liquid plastic is mixed and poured into the mold. The demolded casting is an exact replica of the original antlers.
